Colonial Restorations

Belchertown Historic Barn Stabilization

Lampson Brook Farm Restoration Project

Project Overview

Colonial Restoration was contacted by the New England Small Farm Institute in late summer of 2025 after structural issues were discovered in their historic horse barn. A significant section of the roof was at risk of collapse due to structural failure and spreading within the frame.

Because of the urgency, Colonial Restoration mobilized quickly to install temporary shoring to stabilize the building until full structural restoration work could begin.

The project required temporary structural shoring to support the building while repairs were completed. Once stabilized, Colonial Restorations replaced compromised framing members including:

Replacement timbers were cut to match the original framing dimensions and installed using traditional timber-frame joinery whenever possible.

Project Goals

• Prevent immediate structural failure • Stabilize and restore the barn framing • Return the structure to its original alignment • Reinforce the roof so new shingles could be safely installed

Biggest Challenges

• Imminent risk of roof collapse • Need for rapid response despite scheduling constraints • Structural spreading and sagging in the barn frame • Working on a historic agricultural structure while preserving its character
